Initially part of the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), a government-established entity created to invest in the petroleum industry, Aabar investments became a standalone entity with a broader investment mandate beyond oil and gas.

The company was established in the mid-2000s and functions as part of the wider portfolio of Abu Dhabi government-owned investment firms focused on economic diversification and strategic asset management.
