The Dubai Moving Image Museum, now known as the History of Cinema Museum, is a unique museum located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, dedicated to the history and evolution of the moving image and cinema.
It was inaugurated on January 14, 2014, by Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The museum showcases the private collection of Akram Miknas, in collaboration with Pierre Patau, and presents a permanent exhibition focusing on the prehistory of cinema.
Its collection includes over 300 antique items such as early animation devices like the praxinoscope, zoetrope, and mutoscope, tracing visual entertainment's development from its early forms to the birth of motion picture film.
Located in the Tecom area of Dubai, the museum offers visitors an interactive and educational experience with exhibits ranging from shadow theaters and puppet shows to early peepshows and optical illusions.
The museum emphasizes how people historically entertained themselves through moving images before modern cinema. Though the museum space is reported as modest, it provides a rare and original insight into the origins of cinema that is not commonly found in the region.
The museum aims to inspire curiosity and offer a hands-on understanding of the technology and art of moving images, making it a notable cultural destination for film enthusiasts and the general public interested in the roots of visual storytelling.
Travel teaches toleration.
