Gulf Medical University (GMU) is a private medical university located in Ajman, United Arab Emirates. It was established in 1998 initially as Gulf Medical College by the Thumbay Group under Decree Number 1 issued by His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al-Nuaimi, the ruler of Ajman.

The institution was elevated to university status in 2008 through a royal decree by Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. GMU is recognized as one of the largest private medical universities in the Middle East, offering a wide range of academic programs across six colleges that specialize in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health sciences, nursing, and healthcare management and economics.

The university is accredited by the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation and holds international accreditations to maintain global academic standards.

The university was founded by Dr. Thumbay Moideen, who serves as the President of the Board of Trustees, and is owned and promoted by the Thumbay Group. Prof. Hossam Hamdy serves as the Chancellor of GMU.

The university campus is situated in the Ajman emirate on the western coast of the UAE and serves a diverse student body from over 100 nationalities. GMU is known for its extensive academic health system, the first of its kind in the UAE private sector, comprising several hospitals and clinics in different emirates including Dubai, Ajman, and Sharjah.

This system provides students with extensive clinical training and real-world healthcare experience.

GMU offers 35 accredited programs including Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorates, diplomas, internships, and foundation courses in various healthcare fields. Its curriculum incorporates hands-on learning, research, and healthcare innovation through its dedicated research centers such as the Thumbay Research Institute for Precision Medicine.

The university is ranked highly in regional and global rankings for quality education and healthcare-related research. Over the years, GMU has become a premier institution preparing healthcare professionals and has a significant impact on the UAE healthcare sector, educating nearly 60% of its healthcare workforce including doctors, nurses, and technicians.

It maintains collaborations with more than 90 reputed hospitals and institutions worldwide, fostering international academic and research exchanges.
