Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum (1945–2021) was a prominent Emirati royal and politician who served as the Deputy Ruler of Dubai and as the Minister of Finance and Industry of the United Arab Emirates for nearly five decades, from 1971 until his death in 2021.

Born on December 25, 1945, he was the second son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the influential ruler responsible for Dubai's modernization and its unification with the other emirates to form the UAE.

He received his early education in Dubai and later studied languages in Cambridge. Known for his visionary leadership in finance and industry, he oversaw the development of key industrial enterprises in Dubai, including Dubai Aluminium Company, Dubai Gas Company, and Dubai Cable Company.

He played a major role in diversifying the UAE's economy beyond oil and was a representative for the UAE at international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the OPEC Fund.

He was also an influential figure in the world of thoroughbred horse racing, owning successful racing and breeding operations in the UK, Ireland, and the US, and hosted the prestigious Dubai Arabian Horse Championship. He passed away on March 24, 2021, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Dubai's growth and governance.
