Kehkashan Basu, born on June 5, 2000, in Dubai to Indian immigrant parents, is an internationally recognized environmental and human rights activist. Her passion for environmental protection began at a young age, as she started planting trees and organizing youth for recycling programs by the age of eight.
She gained global attention as the youngest delegate to speak at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) at age twelve, advocating for youth inclusion in sustainable development dialogues. In 2012, she founded the Green Hope Foundation, a global organization that empowers children and youth to engage in grassroots actions aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, including climate justice, biodiversity conservation, gender equality, and social justice.
Under her leadership, the foundation has grown to over 3,000 members across 28 countries, impacting thousands of young people from marginalized communities worldwide. She is a prominent figure in international advocacy, serving as the youngest Councillor of the World Future Council, a Trustee of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, and a United Nations Human Rights Champion.
Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including the 2016 International Children’s Peace Prize and Canada’s Meritorious Service Medal.
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
