Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, born on March 5, 1980, is a distinguished Emirati athlete and a member of Dubai’s ruling Al Maktoum family.
She is the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, and her mother is Houria Ahmed Lamara, an Algerian.
She has gained recognition as a martial artist, excelling in karate and taekwondo, and later ventured into women’s polo. She made history as the first female Olympian from the UAE when she competed in taekwondo at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she also proudly carried the UAE flag at the opening ceremony.
Her athletic career began around 2000, and she quickly made her mark by winning a gold medal in karate at the 10th Pan Arab Games in 2004, becoming the first Emirati woman to win an international gold medal.
She followed this with a silver medal at the 2006 Asian Games and continued to collect accolades, including another gold at the Pan Arab Games in 2007.
Due to injuries sustained from martial arts, she transitioned to playing polo, where she has also achieved significant success, participating in major tournaments and winning titles such as the Polo Masters Cup and the Dubai Polo Challenge in 2021.
