Ousha the Poet

Ousha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi, widely known as Ousha the Poet or Fatat Al-Arab (Girl of the Arabs), was born on January 1, 1920, in Al Ain, in what is now the United Arab Emirates. She is celebrated as one of the finest female poets of the Arabic Nabati tradition, a vernacular form of Bedouin poetry deeply rooted in Emirati culture.

Growing up in a family passionate about poetry and literature, she developed her poetic talent early and began composing poetry at the age of 14. Despite a male-dominated field and limited formal education typical of her time and culture, she gained early recognition within the poetry community for her evocative recitals and compelling compositions.

Influenced by classical Arab poets such as Al-Mutanabbi and local Nabati poets, her poetry elegantly expressed themes of love, wisdom, nostalgia, patriotism, and social commentary, drawing richly on the desert landscapes and traditions of the UAE. Her works often celebrated the beauty of the land, cultural heritage, and the strength of familial bonds, especially the deep affection she expressed towards her brother.

She later moved to Dubai, where she continued to compose and perform poetry throughout her life, becoming a leading cultural figure and the voice of Emirati poetry. She was honored with the title "Fatat Al Khaleej" (Girl of the Gulf) and received numerous accolades for her contributions to literature and culture.

Known for her purity of language, profound emotional depth, and mastery of traditional poetic forms while addressing contemporary issues, she remained influential even as she lost her eyesight later in life, continuing to compose poetry through dictation.

She passed away on July 27, 2018, in Dubai, leaving behind a vast collection of poetry that continues to resonate as a symbol of Emirati cultural pride and female empowerment.
