Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Crossing

Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Crossing, also known as the Sixth Crossing, is a major arch bridge project in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, named in honor of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the former ruler of Dubai.

Designed by FXFOWLE Architects with lighting by AWA Lighting Designers, the bridge aims to become the world’s longest spanning arch bridge, featuring a main arch span of 667 meters (2,188 feet) and an overall length of 1.6 kilometers (0.99 miles).

The bridge, approximately 64 meters (210 feet) wide and rising 15 meters (49 feet) above the water, crosses Dubai Creek and connects the localities of Al Jaddaf and Bur Dubai.

The design includes six lanes of vehicular traffic in each direction, capable of carrying up to 20,000 vehicles per hour, along with a dedicated track in the center for the Dubai Metro’s Green Line.

The project is part of a broader AED 3 billion road infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and traffic flow in the rapidly developing areas along Dubai Creek, including developments near The Lagoons and Dubai Creek Harbour. Construction of the bridge has been extensive, with the project reported to be around 75% complete as of August 2022.

Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Crossing is envisioned not only as a critical transport artery but also as an architectural landmark with striking views of Dubai’s skyline and the creek’s natural ecosystem.

The midway point of the bridge features Dubai Nature Island, a man-made island designed to support and showcase the region’s natural ecology, including tidal landscapes and protected habitats, blending urban infrastructure with environmental conservation.

When completed, the bridge will join Dubai’s existing crossings over Dubai Creek, including Al Maktoum Bridge, Garhoud Bridge, Business Bay Crossing, and Al Shindagha Tunnel, collectively improving the city’s transportation network while symbolizing Dubai’s growth and forward-thinking urban planning.

The phased opening of the Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Improvement Corridor Project has already begun, with Phase I inaugurated in December 2022, marking a significant step towards the bridge’s full operational status. This crossing reflects Dubai’s ongoing commitment to infrastructural innovation and sustainable urban development.
